The Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) is an updated version of the licensing test necessary for becoming a registered nurse. While many features remain, the NGN has been revised to ensure new nurses are equipped to address the demands of modern healthcare. Why is the NCLEX evolving? The NCLEX was designed to assess new graduates' knowledge before starting their nursing careers. It's evolving to better align with today's clinical requirements, with NGN questions intended to more precisely evaluate a nurse's clinical judgment abilities. Industry data shows that many nursing errors stem from inadequate clinical decisions, prompting the update to reflect real-world decision-making in practice. When will the NCLEX changes take place? The Next Generation NCLEX is set to launch on Saturday, April 1, 2023. What modifications are being made to the NCLEX? The NGN will bring changes in question formats, exam length, and scoring methods. Question formats While the current NCLEX mainly includes four-option multiple-choice questions, the NGN introduces diverse question types: Extended multiple response questions require selecting one or more correct answers. Extended drag and drop questions involve choosing and ordering correct options. Drop-down menus present the correct answer alongside incorrect ones for selection. Enhanced hotspot questions need highlighting key information that answers the question. Matrix/grid questions involve selecting the correct answer across various options. Exam length Presently, the NCLEX-RN comprises a minimum of 60 and a maximum of 145 questions. The NGN will require 70 to 135 questions. Scoring The NGN will use a new scoring method with three models: 0/1 scoring awards one point for correct answers, zero for incorrect ones. +/- scoring gives a point for each right answer, deducts one for wrong responses, but negative scores are zeroed. Rationale scoring gives points when both answers in a pair are correct, needing an understanding of cause-and-effect. What remains unchanged about the NCLEX? Despite these updates, some elements will stay constant. Time limit Candidates still have a maximum of five hours, including breaks, to finish the exam. Delivery format The NCLEX’s delivery method remains unchanged. Both versions use computerized adaptive testing (CAT), adjusting questions based on previous answers. How to prepare for the NCLEX NGN?
